Oceania Championships Part 1

WOW! What a way to end the 2010 year with a dominating performance by our elite club and National fighters at the Oceania Championships in Noumea (New Caledonia) where members from our academy represented Australia as part of the National Team.

From the result you can see that our club won 60% of the Gold medals for Australia. Congratulations to Petra Kakakios, Tiaana Di Cicco, Renae Perkins, Emily O'Sullivan, Jasmine Cross and Chad Cross on winning Gold. Mustaafa and Jess this time had to settle for bronze, something that they are not used to.

(Our junior and senior champions with two proud coaches)

Once again the Australian National Taekwondo Team had a large contingent of members from our academy, 8 to be exact. With Mr Rawlins as head coach and Mr Chris Perkins as trainer, this was the largest number of athletes that have come from one academy that have represented Australia at any WTF benchmark event. Something that the club, the instructors and all its members can be very proud of. The comps were held on the beautiful French speaking Island of Noumea, where the people were friendly but things in general were very expensive.

(The beautiful Island of Noumea)

Day 1 saw the juniors in action, and Mr Rawlins and Mr Perkins had their hands full with 7 juniors that they had to keep physically and mentally focus, because for most it was their very first International comp and they were very nervous, 5 (Petra, Tiaana, Renae, Emily & Mustaafa) were from our academy and 2, Nick Lepouris (NSW) and Orlando Powrie (ACT) were also coached by Mr Rawlins. All the juniors bonded very well and helped each other in calming each others nerves. Before the start of the competition we were treated to a traditional Island welcome and ceremony, then it was game on.

(Traditional welcome ceremony & Juniors who were coached by the chief)

All junior performed extremely well and at the end of the day Mr Rawlins successfully coached 4 Gold ( Petra, Tiaana, Renae & Emily), 1 Silver (Nick) and 2 Bronze (Mustaafa & Orlando). The stand out fighter for the juniors was Tiaana who in her first international competition beat 2 much more experienced fighters from New Zealand and Australia to win the Gold. Well done Nani and our hard line story was Mustaafa, who was in front at the 3rd round 14 -3 , but somehow manage to lose the match with the referees help, deduction of points (the referee just didn't like him or want him to win) final score 14- 6 but he still lost by the 4 point deduction rule (unlucky and hard done Musty). Nick was also unlucky to lose the gold medal in the 4th round by sudden death (first to score wins) but then again that's the nature of our sport. At the end of day 1 of competition, Australia finish with 5 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze.

WELL DONE JUNIOR AUSSIE TEAM.

Oceania Championships (Part 2).

Day 2 saw our senior Australian Team members in action, and it was very important for everyone to give it their all as this was a WTF benchmark event for World rankings and the one step closer to the Olympic Selections. Jessica, Jasmine and Chad were flying our club colours and did their very best to win a medal for themselves, our club and Australia.

Chad started off slowly in his first match against a strong New Zealand fighter, and had Mr Rawlins very nerves as the scores were very close but at the start of the 3rd round he woke up, listened and did what had to be done, and won by 3 points to advance to the next round. His next two fights were just as thrilling and entertaining with Chad getting the wins in both, his last fight was against a very skilled and experienced opponent who was ranked as one of the top ten heavyweight fighters in the world but with some good advice from Mr Rawlins, Chad went out with all guns blazing and had a good lead by the end of the 2nd round. His opponent had the home town advantage and with the crowd behind him took the fight right up to Chad, so when a few more points started to come up for the other fighter in the 3rd round, Mr Rawlins once again gained a few more grey hairs but managed to keep Chad under control to win his second Oceania gold medal. Well done Chad.

(Chad in action and on the podium after the best fight of the competition)

Jess unknown to many was caring several injuries as she entered these competitions, and just generally burnt out from competing in so many competitions in 2010 (like many of our fighters). She did her best but lost in the quarter finals to New Zealand Olympic fighter for 2008 by a golden point. Both Mr Rawlins and Jess were disappointed with the outcome but they both also knew that the next time the results would be a lot different. Jess had to settle for a bronze this time. Unlucky Jess.

Jasmine was on fire for these championships as she demolished all her opponents that got in her way with flawless victories with her last fight setting a record for the fastest knockout at an international competition when she executed a well timed and planned turning kick to her opponents face within the first 15 seconds of the first round. It happened so quick that most of the people missed it. Nevertheless it happened and she too claimed her second Oceania gold medal. Jazzy you killer.

(Jess and Jasmine in action)

Another fantastic results and performance by all our members in the Australian Team. Your hard work, sacrifice and dedication have shown, and your coaches, fellow club members and your love ones are very, very proud of you all. You are all an inspiration to us.

(Happy senior team and 3 very happy and proud coaches)

(The Australian Coaching Staff)

(The whole Australian Team)

After the 2 days of competitions it was time to let our hair down, party hard, explore and enjoy the beautiful Island of Noumea as well as its sights and scenery. Enjoy the pictures.

(Party time)

(Boat trip to turtle Island. Don't know what Mr Olomi is trying to do)

(Emily and Chad enjoy themselves)

(Renae, Petra and Tiaana just chilling)
